When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is
submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on
the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down.

You add starred sites to the bar by creating a collection and adding to a collection using the Favorites menu or the menupop associated with the arrow on the star button. You can then use the select box on the right-hand side of the toolbar to switch between collections. This means less clutter on your toolbar.
